UCLG supports decentralised South-South cooperation between local governments with the support of local government associations. This type of cooperation is an important component of international cooperation for development and offers viable opportunities for developing countries and in countries with economies in transition in their individual and collective pursuit of sustained economic growth and sustainable development.

Currently, UCLG Strategic Planning Committee, with the support of the European Union, Governement of Norway, the Cities Alliance as well as other partners: ANAMM, FNP, Architects without borders, UNESCO chair for Intermediary Cities, University of Lleida and the Municipality of Barcelona is supporting decentralized cooperation between 6 cities of Brazil and 8 cities of Mozambique in planning and sustainable urban development.

Thanks to Cities Alliance and Norwegian support, South South partnerships within African regions are increasing as partners and members join in the effort, namely: Maputo and Durban are exchange on markets, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), Sao Paulo city  and Durban on housing  in partnership with Metropolis, as well as cross border city partnership projects between Nampula and Blantyre, and Kwadukuza and Swakopmund to be supported by GIZ. All these partnerships are based on a demand assesments to meet strategic needs.

We celebrate and express our confidence and support for decentralised cooperation on the UN day for South-South cooperation, between peers and based on the experience and knowledge accumulated by cities throughout their development process. We hope to continue offering this support with the trust and inspiration that our members awaken in our organization.
