The municipalist world laments the death of its colleague and friend, Néstor Vega

We have just received the sad news of the unexpected death of our dear colleague and friend, Néstor Vega, an indispensable companion of our shared passion: municipalism. Today, we all feel that from now on we will be missing an essential piece of our great family. The entire team of the World Secretariat would like to express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, to whom, from Barcelona, we send a heartfelt hug.

Néstor will remain in our memories forever. We will miss his dedication, team spirit and above all his sense of humour and his fine irony in complicated moments. Thank you, Néstor, for your contribution to municipalism in Latin America and across the world, and for your friendship throughout so many years.

Néstor’s colleagues of the UCLG World Secretariat.

Today we have lost a true warrior of the municipal movement and an unconditional member of UCLG. It is with deep sadness and regret that I share with you the news of the death of our dear Néstor Vega Jiménez.

Those of us who knew him knew well his great knowledge, but above all his generosity and humility. His commitment to the empowerment of women made him a pioneer in a time when few male colleagues assumed that task.

A fervent defender of local democracy, he always defined it as a basic human right to put people at the centre of the agenda and interests. Curious and an insatiable reader, he made us cross barriers in the use of new technologies long before they were instruments used and assumed by the majority.

Néstor Vega was one of the strongest solidarity activists that have given a foundation to our movement. Even from a distance, and from other jobs, his support has been unconditional, creative and constructive. His legacy will always accompany us and we will always miss him.

Message from Emilia Saiz, Secretary General of UCLG.

Nestor left unforgettable memories in our hearts and in our memories:
