Local and regional governments represented at Climate Negotiations in Lima

COP 20 Lima

The climate negotiations, in the framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will take place from 1 to 12 December in Lima, Peru. High expectations are placed upon the so-called COP 20 (Lima) , as it should pave the way for reaching a global agreement to follow the Kyoto Protocol at COP 21 in Paris next year.

Local and regional governments have traditionally been very active in Climate Mitigation and Adaptation efforts, as well as in providing concrete inputs to the intergovernmental negotiations. An important mobilization is expected next year when the UCLG World Council will coincide with COP 21. Many members of UCLG will be attending, supporting the local and regional government delegation, mobilized on the occasion of COP 20. A number of events have been organized by local and regional government organizations and their partners during the two weeks (click here to see the full programme).

It is worth highlighting that a High-level event of local and regional governments will take place at Lima City Hall on 8 December, at the invitation of the Mayor, Ms. Susana Villarán, and the Local Government Climate RoadmapSecond Steering Committee of the World Summit on Climate and Territories, to take place in Lyon, France, in July 2015, will also be held in Lima.

The COP 20 in Lima will also be an opportunity for organizations promoting the Compact of Mayors, an initiative launched during the Climate Summit in New York in September, to present the initiative and discuss further implementation
