Equality and mobility, two fundamental steps towards the UCLG Congress in Durban

From 12 to 22 September, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), by the initiative of its metropolitan section, Metropolis, will participate in the Mobility Week campaign together with its other regional sections.

This year's campaign will focus on calling attention to the realities experienced by women with respect to urban mobility and transport in each territory. For UCLG it's a priority to have a cross-cutting gender perspective at the local and regional level in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 11 and thus provide all territories, inclusively #leavingnoonebehind, with more sustainable, healthy and accessible ways of transport.

The campaign is in line with the coordinated efforts of UCLG and its sections to create an All-UCLG Gender Equality Strategy within the framework of the UCLG World Congress and the World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, as well as in the general strategy of the organisation. During the congress, political leaders from the constituency of local and regional governments will have the opportunity to dialogue and interact with civil society on gender policies in an open format.

More than 1600 cities have already registered for Mobility Week with the aim of fostering dialogue and understanding between citizens, local governments and various stakeholders.

This year's campaign will focus on walking and cycling and the ways in which active mobility can benefit our health, the environment (and even our bank balances). This is in line with the European Commission's priority goal of moving towards emission-free urban logistics in all major urban centres by 2030.

With this initiative UCLG and Metropolis call for action to take one more step towards building a resilient, sustainable and inclusive city model where there is gender equality, and invite all UCLG regional sections to join this initiative. All UCLG sections and members will have a chance to share the reality of their cities and territories through the hashtags #GenderEquality #mobilityweek.

Join the European Mobility Week campaign and share your city's gender and mobility initiatives!
