ECOSOC 2013: the role of culture in sustainable development

The UCLG Committee on Culture has prepared the document “ECOSOC 2013: the role of culture in sustainable development to be explicitly recognized” to assist persons and organizations willing to effectively contribute to the preparations of the 2013 session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The international community is debating the new paradigm which will define development policies and programmes for the decades to come, in a process which is known as the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The next two years –and in particular the upcoming sessions of the ECOSOC– will provide a unique window of opportunity to make sure that culture is given adequate consideration, as driver and as enabler of sustainable development. Culture is about creativity, heritage, knowledge and diversity, and it is intrinsically connected to human development and freedoms.

The content of this document can be used in advocacy and lobby initiatives, in particular in the preparation of the ECOSOC 2013 as well as in other processes related to explicit recognition of culture in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. It can be also disseminate and spread.
