Metropolis Annual Meeting

The countdown has begun to the Metropolis Annual Meeting entitled “Caring Cities”, which will take place inJohannesburg between 16 and 19 July 2013.

The event is getting bigger every day, with over 55 cities and around 90 speakers confirmed, distributed over the 16 sessions scheduled in the program (click here to download). The event also has the backing of collaborating institutions with a major international projection and who you will be able to make contact with during the Meeting.

We also invite you to take part in the programmed activities, such as the technical visits for a first-hand experience of the XTreme Park Makeover, Soweto and Inner City/Downtown. Other highlights include the two sessions to be organized by the Metropolis International Women’s Networkand the UN-Habitat’s Global Safer Cities Network under the theme of Safer Cities For All; the Thematic Sessions, to be led by the host city of Johannesburg and which encompass themes around the “Caring Cities” concept; the celebration of Mandela Day, now more touching than ever; and the Metropolis Initiatives, which will showcase the progress made this year.

Moreover, during thesessions you will have the opportunity to interact with local, national and international decision-makers and academic personalities, including the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Mr. Mpho Parks Tau; the UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Dr. Joan Clos; Gauteng Premier, Mrs. Nomvula Mokonyane; the Mayor of Berlin, Mr. Michael Müller; the Vice-Mayor of São Paulo, Mrs. Nadia Campeão; the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Mr. Mauricio Macri; and the Executive Vice-President of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, Mr. Antonio Balmon, among many others (see the confirmed speakers here).

Finally, anyone who has not yet registered is encouraged to do so as soon as possible by clicking here. We would also ask you to arrange your hotel reservation, as given the large attendance at the meeting, the main site of the meeting, the Hilton Sandton Hotel, is at the limit of its capacity.
