On 20-23 September, the Secretary General of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) will participated in the Meeting of the Americas on Climate Change (Bogota Climate Summit), the main Latin-American event in the run-up to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21) to be held in Paris in December 2015.
In the spirit of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change held in New York in September of 2014, the aims of the Conference are to promote, encourage and strengthen climate action by non-state actors, to contribute to the empowerment of society in the face of climate change, and to support the adoption of an ambitious and inclusive global climate agreement at the COP21 in Paris.
The meeting will be based on the Bogota Declaration: America in defense of water, land and life. This declaration sets out a position on the subjects of the meeting and their local, regional and international impact, as well as on the impact of climate change on cities, citizens and local governments.
UCLG is convinced that the success of global and national policies on global warming will depend, in large part, on the commitment and action of local and regional governments alongside civil society.
The meeting will also be a chance to make progress in the preparations for the Fifth UCLG World Congress, to be celebrated in Bogota in 2016.
